The cell comprises a zinc anode positioned within a casing and at least one, divalent, silver oxide cathode, spaced from the anode. A viscous electrolytic solution comprising an aqueous alkaline electrolyte and 5-40 wt.% magnesium oxide powder is in contact with the electrodes. Preferably, the anode is centrally placed and surrounded by a chemically inert separator, and a cathode is placed on either side of the anode. The cell may be sealed after adding the electrolyte. Divalent silver oxide is normally unstable in alkaline electrolytes. The addition of magnesium oxide powder has a stabilising effect, minimising self discharge and eliminating silver migration and electrolytic pumping. As the cell is sealed there is no electrolyte leakage.
|
