In a method and apparatus for logging the grade distribution of a borehole core, the core 50 is mounted in a sleeve 36 and rotated (38,40). An irradiating source 16 mounted on a carriage 14 irradiates the core and is moved parallel to the core by a motor, gear and lead screw arrangement 28, 30, 20, 22. A signal produced by a detector 18 also mounted on the carriage 14, and the output signal of the detector is recorded. The method is performed by notionally dividing the core into a plurality of segments, e.g. by stepwise moving the carriage to respective positions and scanning the core (by rotation of the core) at each of these positions.
