Cigarettes are transported in a crosswise direction and a lengthwise direction simultaneously by a rotating drum, which has a screw-shaped groove. During transportation, the existance and/or nonexistence of the cigarettes are checked by a light sensor. In this process, the existence of the interval between articles is not important. The sensor is composed of a light source, a receiver, a signal amplifier, and a counter.
