PURPOSE:To control the shape of a taper part with high precision and to obtain an optical start coupler having desired characteristics by moving a heat source axially at a specific speed when a hollow glass pipe and an optical fiber bundle are welded together and drawn. CONSTITUTION:The optical fiber bundle is inserted into the hollow glass pipe and heated, and the heated hollow glass pipe is twisted to weld the hollow glass pipe and optical fiber bundle together, thus forming a solid glass rod 9. Then, chucks 4A and 4B of main shaft bases 3A and 3B of a lathe which holds the glass rod 9 are rotated as shown by an arrow 10 and a burner 5 is arranged at a point S. Then, the burner 5 while ignited is moved at the specific speed as shown by an arrow 15, and when the burner 5 reaches a point E, the flame is extinguished and the main shaft base 3B is also stopped to form the taper part 12. |
