Test devices on the engine, e.g. an ignition sensor (18) a stroboscope (22) and an RPM sensor (20) connect via short screened leads to the metal covered peripheral test box (14), hooked (23) onto the bonnet. The test signals are digitalised amplified and multiplexed in the test box before passing through an isolator onto the plug and socket (16) connected output lead (15). The output lead transmits the test signals to the measurement and display devices such as a multitester (11), an RPM display (12) a motor tester (13) and an ignition oscillograph (14). Optical fibres may be used between peripheral box and displays.
