The invention relates to improvements to the notching device of knives with retractable blades. The subject of the invention is a knife with a blade 2 which can be retracted axially inside the handle by means of a push button 3, of the type comprising a notching device locking the blade in any one of a series of more or less extended positions of the blade, by means of a pathway with sawteeth cooperating with a locking protrusion, means being provided for connecting or disconnecting the said protrusion of the said pathway, the said knife being characterised in that the pathway is constituted by teeth 7 whose edge 7a facing the outlet end of the blade 2 is inclined with respect to the plane of the blade and whose opposite side 7b is perpendicular to the plane of the blade and in that the locking protrusion or protrusions are constituted by a tooth 8 whose edge 8a facing the outlet end of the blade is perpendicular to the plane of the latter and whose other edge 8b is inclined.
