Reference electrode

The novel reference electrode is based on a sensor which responds to charges, for example an ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (ISFET) having a gate layer and a chemically inert layer, preferably made of plastic. Such an ISFET can be operated electrically so as to produce an electrical output signal which depends almost exclusively on the potential of the solution and only to an negligible extent on the total ion concentration and the specific ion concentration of the solution.
