Agents for preventing physiological disorders (esp. disorders of milk output, of metabolism and of fertility) in dairy cows in the puerperal phase consist of a supplementary feed contg. 150-600 g raw protein per animal per day, the protein cpds. being protected against premature degradation in the rumen. The new agents overcome protein deficiency experienced by dairy cows during the puerperal phase (10 weeks following calving or onset of lactation) attributed to increased energy requirement at this time accompanied by poor absorption of nutrients. The protein content of milk from cows fed the supplementary protein is higher than that of cows fed no supplementary protein, and the actual amt. of milk can be increased. Agents also prevent reproductive disorders and metabolic disorders that can otherwise arise from protein deficiency during the puerperal phase. Administration of the supplementary protein in a form protected against degradation by rumen bacteria ensures that all of the administered protein is physiologically available to the cow. |
