In a method of controlling the strip thickness of rolled material running out of a roll stand, wherein the strip thickness h in the roll nip is determined indirectly according to the relationship <IMAGE> where s = roll setting, Fw = rolling force, 1/M = spring constant of the roll stand (gauge meter principle), periodical fluctuations in the strip thickness are to be detected completely and correctly, high absolute accuracy of the strip thickness measurement being achieved. This is achieved when the measured value of the strip thickness, determined directly by a thickness-measuring instrument downstream of the roll stand, is additionally delayed by a first running time term (T1), the additional running time being set as a function of the strip speed or roll rotation speed in such a way that the total of running time of the strip from the roll nip to the thickness-measuring instrument plus the additional running time is equal to the period of one revolution of the back-up roll, when the directly measured thickness value thus delayed, the indirectly measured thickness value and the indirectly measured thickness value delayed by a second running time term (T2), whose dead time corresponds to one revolution of the back-up roll, with a negative sign are summated, and that the deviation of these summated measured thickness values from a preset nominal strip thickness value is used, after control amplification, for adjusting the roll weighting or the strip tension.
