For a spring strut for a vehicle, especially for a motor cycle, it is in many cases desirable that the spring characteristic be variable as a function of the rate of compression and/or the compression travel. A variation of the spring characteristic during the braking process is desirable especially in the case of motor cycles in order largely to avoid dipping of the telescopic fork. In the case of spring struts which comprise an inner and an outer tube, which are carried so as to be axially movably and sealed off inside one another like a telescope and define an internal chamber filled with damping liquid and gas, at least one spring being arranged in this internal chamber, a variation of the spring characteristic as a function of one control variable is simply achieved in that in the inner tube carried in the outer tube an axially movable separating element is arranged in the area of the damping liquid filling, which element subdivides the internal chamber into two working chambers and that these working chambers can be connected to one another by way of a passage cross section arranged in the separating element and/or interacting with the separating element.
