Process for the lateral positioning of a member (16) with respect to a discontinuity (18) formed between two metallic surfaces (12a, 14a) which are capable of being vertically offset with respect to one another, employing at least one probe (10) having two coils (B1 , B2 ) symmetrically disposed with respect to an axis (_a) contained in a plane normal to said surfaces and passing through the discontinuity, characterized in that said probe (10) is a Foucault current detector, and in that the coils (B1 , B2 ) are displaced independently of one another in a direction normal to said surfaces (12a, 14a) whereby to equalize the distances separating each coil from its facing surface, whatever the distances by which said surfaces are offset.
