Spectrophotometric apparatus is incorporated in a portable housing (100) with a light source (102) for emitting a wide band of radiation. A photosensitive detector (112) is responsive to the monochromatic light derived from a specimen located outside the housing (100) and passed through filter system (110) to provide output signals representative of the spectrophotometric characteristics of the specimen. In one embodiment, a calibration rod (104) is mounted to the apparatus and extends from the housing (100) with an end portion (106) thereof retaining a substance having a known spectrophotometric characteristic for calibrating the photosensitive detector (112).
