2(1H)-Pyridinone of formula (I), where Q is H or an acid addn. salt thereof, is prepd. by heating the compd. of formula (I), where Q is cyano or carboxy, in a aq. inorganic acid. In the formula, R1 is H, lower alkyl or lower hydroxyalkyl; R is lower alkyl; PY is 4-, 3- or 2-pyridinyl or 4-, 3- or 2-pyridinyl having one or two lower alkyl substituents. The compds. are cardiotonic agents useful in compsns. for increasing cardiac contractility in a patient.
