Compounds of formula (I): wherein: R<1> represents a methyl group; and R<2> represents a C1-C4 alkoxy group; and pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof are valuable antibiotics suitable for oral administration. They may be prepared by reacting a compound of formula (II): (wherein X represents a halogen atom and R<1> and R<2> are as defined above) with thiourea.
