1287299 Carpets THERMO WEAVE Inc 3 Nov 1969 [18 Nov 1968] 53838/69 Heading A4S [Also in Divisions D1 B5] A non-woven product, e.g. rug, mat, or tile, is produced by freezing a moistened stack C of layers of sheet material from which are cut off slabs D having ribbon-like elements E extending along their length, at least one face of the slabs being bonded to a backing element F. The sheet material may be plastics, leather or textile fabric and may be scrap material from which shapes have been cut out, resulting in the ribbonlike elements in the slabs D having irregular edges. The frozen slabs D are passed through a defreezer 17 before bonding to the backing F and may be cut into tiles T, Fig. 2. A further slicer 19, Fig. 1, may subdivide the elements E to produce tiles (T2), Fig. 4 (not shown) with upstanding teeth-like elements. For heat insulating tiles, a backing F, Fig. 6 (not shown), is bonded to both sides of the element. The backing F may be plastics material extruded directly from an extruding head on to the elements D. The ribbon-like elements E may be spaced apart by a slurry of lint or pulp between the sheets in the stack C, the slabs D being only partly defrozen before bonding to the backing and unbonded lint or pulp being finally removed from between the elements E by suction. If water-soluble adhesives are used for the bonding; the slabs need not be defrozen before bonding. |
