1287049 Propylene polymerization CHISSO CORP 10 Sept 1970 43391/70 Heading C3P Propylene, optionally mixed with otherα- olefins as comonomers, is polymerized in the liquid phase at a temperature below 80‹ C. substantially in the absence of any solvent, using a catalyst comprising (i) TiCl 3 or TiCl 3 .1/3 AlCl 3 (ii) R 2 AlR<SP>1</SP> where R is C 1 -C 4 alkyl and R<SP>1</SP> is C 1 -C 4 alkyl or Cl or Br and (iii) a polyethyleneglycol ether or thio analogue thereof of formula R<SP>2</SP>-X-(CH 2 CH 2 X) n -R<SP>3</SP> where X is O or S, each of R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> is alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl and n is an integer, preferably 2-5. A small amount of solvent may be used to slurry the catalyst. The catalyst is removed by treatment with an alcohol, preferably mixed with a hydrocarbon. The products have an atactic content below 4À5% and can be used satisfactorily, e.g. for moulding, without removing this. The examples describe the preparation of propylene homopolymers and an ethylene-propylene copolymer.
