Lubricant oil composition containing a friction modifier

A lubricant composition includes a mineral lubricanting lubricant composition and a friction modifying amount of a reaction product of an amine and maleic anhydride represented by the formula: <IMAGE> in which X and X' are either: <IMAGE> (A) in which R and R' can be any hydrocarbon radicals and the total number of carbon atoms in R plus R' varies from about 6 to about 30, and wherein the nitrogen is bound to a secondary carbon atom, or wherein R is a hydrogen atom and R' is a branched hydrocarbon radical having from about 6 to 30 carbon atoms, or <IMAGE> (B) in which Y varies from 2 to 6, and in which R'' is a hydrocarbon radical having from about 6 to 30 carbon atoms, and R''' is hydrogen or a methyl radical. The lubricant composition finds use in various internal combustion engines including slow and medium speed diesel engines and as a lubricant in the upper cylinder of a slow speed marine diesel engine.
