3-Methyl cepham I (R = benzyl, phenoxymethyl; R1 = benzohydrin, P- nitrobenzyl, benzyl, p-methoxybenzyl, 2,2,2trichloroethyl), which has broad-spectrum antibiotic functions, was prepared. Thus, p- nitrobenzyl-2-(3-phenoxymethyl-2-thia-6oxo-4,7-diazabicyclo- [3,2,0 hept-3-en-7-il-3-methyl-3-butenoate was dissolved in methylformate, added to propylenoxide and cooled 0-2≦̸C with ice. This compound was treated with t-butylhypochlorite and dried with MgSO4 to give p-nitrobenzyl-2-3(phenoxymethyl-2thia-6-oxo-4,7-diazabicyclo- [3,2,0 -hept-3-en-7-il)-3-chloromethyl -3-butenoate.
