The prod. is directed through the passages of a multi-tube rotor encased in a fixed shell through which hot gases are passed. The rotor comprises a set of parallel tubes, equally spaced on a pitch parallel tubes, equally spaced on a pitch circle concentric with the axis of rotation, and cylindrical, coaxial manifolds welded one on each end of the set of tubes to serve as feed and discharge stations. Deflector baffles for hot gas are provided on the inside of the casing and on the outside of the set of tubes. The shell has inlet ports forhot gas, one at each end of the shell, and a single induced exhaust outlet port midway between the inlet ports. The distance between adjacent tubes and the clearance between the rotor tubes and the shell are selected so that hot gas flows at a constant speed in the shells and rotor spaces. Each tube pref. has a roughened or ribbed exterior to enhance the transfer of head. The base of the shell is pre.f. fitted with a conveyor to discharge accumulated solids deposited by incoming hot gas. Used for calcining minerals etc. partic. for the prodn. of fertilisers, hot gasepassages sized for optimum efficiency of heat transfer. The rotor tubes can be extended beyond the heater shell to pass thro. A refrigerator shell in which the prod. is cooled without being transferred from the tubes; this eliminates costly transfer conveyors which tend to damage the prod. |
