Method of generating thermal energy where the fuel is pieces of metallic aluminium and the oxidizing substance is a diluted water solution of hydrogen peroxide. A small addition of a mercury salt, such as mercury (II) chloride, is required to initiate the reaction. The mercury salt serves as a catalyst and is therefore not consumed. If the reaction is carried out in a closed system, high-pressure water vapour may form. The method may be utilized where there is no combustion air, such as under water or where a high output in relationship to weight and volume is desired. |
