In the process for coating a metal pipe (1) at least one thermo-plastic material tape (2) is rolled to the preheated surface of the pipe. The heating of the pipe is limited both superficially and in depth to an area of which the width is related to that of the tape (2) to be applied and the application of said tape (2) is carried out at a sufficiently close distance to the heating area so that the surface temperature of the pipe (1) in the thus preheated area is compatible with the adhesion of said tape.
