<p>PURPOSE:To easily form a liquid crystal orienting film in a short time without requiring a rubbing step by aligning an acicular powder in the prescribed direction on a transparent electrode formed on a base plate by the action of an electric or magnetic field and heat treating it in this state. CONSTITUTION:A transparent electrode layer 2 is formed on a transparent base plate 3, and a proper number of plates 3 are erected at intervals on another electrode 8. An acicular powder 7, such as acicular crystals of SiO or SiO2, as a material for forming an orienting film is placed on a mesh-formed electrode 6 opposite to the electrode 8. Voltage is applied to between both electrodes 6, 8 to vibrate the electrode 6 and drop the powder 7 through the electrode 6. The powder is electrostatically charged in passing through it, and attached uniformly to the electrode layers 2 arranged perpendicularly or slantly downward. Then, the vibration of the electrode 6 is stopped, and heat treatment is executed while the electric field is continuously being applied, and the powder 7 is fixed to the electrode layers 2. A liquid crystal orienting film is thus formed.</p> |
