The mechanism is intended for cleaning a ships hull (17) below water. A frame (2) is hauled transversely from one side to the other by at least one and pref. two cables (1). An inner swivel frame is carried on a shaft (6) parallel to the hull surfaces and normal to the direction (18) of movement. - The ends of the swivel frame carry holders (4) for brushes (4'). When one brush meets an obstacle (16) e.g. an anti-roll keel, the swivel frame rotates through 180 deg. During this movement the attitude of the brushes is maintained, e.g. via endless chains, so that they face the hull surface.
