Process for obtaining alkali metal or alkaline-earth metal salts of tetracarbonylcobalt hydride by reaction of a derivative of cobalt 2<+> with carbon monoxide in the presence of an inorganic base taken from the group formed by the alkali metal hydroxides and the alkaline-earth metal hydroxides and the alkali metal and alkaline-earth metal bicarbonates and at least one sulphur derivative which contains at least one sulphur atom whose oxidation state is less than or equal to +3, characterised in that an ether or a water/ether mixture is used as the reaction medium.
