To compost waste, or mixtures of waste, waste water and sludge, by thermal degradation, the processed waste material is layered homogeneously with air entering from below. Each layer is left to itself over a certain period, i.e. until an internal structure develops in the layer predominantly by matting. Only then is the next layer applied. Below the first layer, there is arranged an air-filter bed, under which air is fed under a slight superatmospheric pressure. The air is kept conditioned with regard to temperature and relative atmospheric humidity in such a way that the water loss caused by the air leaving the clamp (reaction phase) is compensated for. The air to be fed in can be heated as and when the temperature in the clamp rises due to the thermal degradation process. Temperature and relative atmospheric humidity of the air to be fed in will depend on the temperature and/or the CO2 content and/or the O2 content in the bottom-most layer of the clamp.
