This device comprises two application shoes 3, 4 accompanied by a moving detector 5 which detects the border 14 to be sewn, and means for driving the said shoes: the detector automatically seeks out the border 14 to be sewn by rotating about the point 12 of introduction of the piece 9; the shoes 3, 4 are applied to the piece 9 by two actuators when the border is detected; the shoes 3, 4 are then rotated through the same angle as each other but in opposite directions, and consequently they orient the piece in the predetermined direction required for sewing; under the action of an actuator 7, one of the shoes 4 passes the now oriented piece 9 under the pressure foot 13 of the sewing machine 10. <IMAGE>
