Gas heaters in bathrooms can cause accidental death from carbon monoxide gas poisoning if they malfunction. The present system detects any dangerous concn. of CO gas near the heater, sounds an alarm, shuts off the gas supply and forces the bathroom door to open. - The mains electrical supply (1) is transformed (2) to a lower voltage, rectified (3) and fed to the detector and alarm unit (4). The alarm unit has a rechargeable back-up battery in case of mains failure. Outputs (5,6) from the unit operate the gas supply shut-off valve (7) and operate the door lock release mechanism (8), allowing a spring-loaded arm (10) to force the door open, and admit fresh air.
