The invention relates to a method and a pick-up baler for processing straw, hay and fodder, consisting in compressing, in a pressing duct 16, a certain load of straw in the dry state into a compact block with a degree of compression and a length which are possibly variable by selective adjustment and in maintaining the shape and size of this block in the finished released state. The load of straw and the compression force applied to the latter are sufficient for the previously mentioned block to constitute a substantially round cylindrical consistent sausage, relatively small or short and made of material compressed to such a degree that it remains agglomerated while thus retaining by itself the configurations and dimensions of the said sausage in the finished released state. The invention is applicable to the manufacture of products to be used as fuel and as food for livestock. <IMAGE>
