The present invention creates a vibration damper acting as a function of the load in that the recoil force of at least one spring supported on the vehicle body is exerted on a damping valve acting both in a tensile and in a compression direction. The spring supported on the vehicle body may be the vehicle spring itself or it may be a spring supporting a part. Allowing additional bump stops to act on the damping valve is also feasible so that, for example, starting from a certain compression travel of the piston rod the bump stop increases both the spring force and the damping force.
