A method for mining a mineral such as potassium from a mining field 2 of potassium-containing material is described, according to which pieces of the field are mined one after the other by repeated passage of a mining machine from one end of the field to the other. The mined material is removed by a displaceable belt conveyor which extends from one end of the field to the other and on which the material is supplied to a suitable point, at which the mineral is separated from the residual material. The material which does not contain mineral, expediently the residual material remaining after separation from the mineral, passes to another displaceable belt conveyor which extends from one end of the space formed by the removed pieces to the other. This material then serves for filling, from one end to the other, the furthest removed space, from which a piece is mined, in order to support the hanging section remaining after removal of the pieces. <IMAGE>
