A cathode ray tube has a tubular sheath (1), an electron beam source (K, G1, G2) with a beam-limiting aperture (LA), a first electrode (G3), a second electrode (G4), a third electrode (G5) and a mesh electrode (G6). The first, second and third electrodes form an elastostatic lens arrangement for focusing the electron beam. The second electrode (G4) is used as a deflection electrode. It has an arrow-shaped or zigzag-shaped pattern (H-, V+, H+, V-) in order to deflect the beam. The length of the second electrode is preferably between (1/3l - 1/10l) and (1/3l + 1/10l) and the distance between the beam-limiting aperture and the centre of the second electrode is preferably between (1/2l - 1/3l) and 1/2l, l being the distance between the beam-limiting aperture and the mesh electrode. <IMAGE>
