A process for the concentration of light in plastic sheets in which, as fluorescent centres, perylenetetracarboxylic acid diimides of the formula <IMAGE> are used, the compounds (I) being prepared by chlorination of (I) where n = 0 with sulphuryl chloride in inert organic liquids in the presence of catalysts. In the formula, n denotes 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 and R and R<1> independently of one another denote a) linear or branched C1- to C18-alkyl which is optionally substituted by cyano, hydroxyl, cycloalkyl, alkylcarbonyloxy, alkenylcarbonyloxy or cycloalkylcarbonyloxy, where the alkyl chain can also be interrupted by O or S, or b) C5- to C18-cycloalkyl which is optionally substituted by alkyl, carboalkoxy or trifluoromethyl. Novel perylenetetracarboxylic acid diimides of the formula (I) in which n = 4 and R and R<1> denote 3-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-propyl, 2-ethylhexyl, butyl, octyl, tridecyl, octadecyl, 3-pinanylmethyl, 6-(2'-ethylhexanoyloxy)-6-methyl-2-heptyl, 4-methylcyclohexyl, 3,5-dimethylcyclohexyl, 2,6-dimethylcyclohexyl, 2,6-diisopropylcyclohexyl or norbornyl or R denotes C4- to C12-alkyl, cyclohexyl substituted by C1- to C4-alkyl, cyclohexyl-C1- or -C2-alkyl and R<1> denotes 2-hydroxyethyl, C1- to C19-alkylcarbonyloxy-C2- to -C4-alkyl, C6- to C12-cycloalkyl carbonyloxy-C2- to -C4-alkyl or C2- to C4-alkenyl carbonyloxy-C2- to -C4-alkyl.
