<p>Shaped SiC articles, useful as sliding materials for seals, bearings, blades; abrasive material for mills, millstones and files; multi-layer structures, e.g. honeycomb cell matrices for rotating gas turbine heat-exchangers; heating units, are made by (i) shaping C material having a true specific wt. =2.1 and heat expansion coefft. 3-6 (3.5-4.5) x 10-6/degrees C, to articles with desired shape and having 20-40% porosity and (ii) treating the shaped C articles with SiO gas at 1800-2100 degrees C, thus converting at least surface of shaped C to SiC. Part of shaped C article may not be converted to SiC and is burnt in an oxidising atmos.</p> |
