A device for immersing a specimen 10 into a cryogenic cooling liquid 5 comprises an injector 12' for carrying the specimen 10, means 14 for accelerating the injector 12' to a predetermined velocity vertically into the liquid 5, and means 20 to 24 for rotating the injector 12', before the vertical movement ends, or at the moment it ends, to promote heat transfer from the specimen.
