A switch device, which can be mounted in a column, is described which is mounted on a steering column of a motor vehicle. A rotating element (14) is held on a base plate (1) such that it can rotate about a first rotation axis (14a) in a first direction; an operating lever (18) is held on the rotating element (14) about a second rotation axis (17), which is directed essentially at right angles to the first rotation axis; and a first switch means (21) is mounted on the base plate (1) in such a manner that it is operated by the operating lever (18), by means of the rotating element (14), in a direction parallel to the second rotation axis (17). In this case, the distance between the first rotation axis (14a) and an operating part of the first switch means (21) is kept sufficiently large that the first switch means (21) can be operated reliably. <IMAGE>
