Novel compounds represented by the general formula when a and b are each 0 or 1 and R represents OH or lower alkoxy when a is 1, or OH or -NR'2 when a is zero, can be prepared by the reaction of allyl glycidyl ether with the appropriate organic acid e.g. salicylic acid. The compounds are useful as ultra-violet absorbent substances and as intermediates for the preparation of other such substances, for example by polymerisation and copolymerisation and by reaction with organosilicon compounds having silicon-bonded hydrogen atoms.
