For treating contaminated water, apparatuses having propellers and the like driven by submerged motors are used both for the circulation and mixing of the water and also for aeration, feed of oxygen by suction of air into the water. Such apparatuses mix water well at all depths for the same power consumption. In contrast, effective aeration by suction of external air by the reduced pressure produced by the working propeller succeeds only in the upper water layers. Mixing and aerating, in terms of engineering, are two separate tasks for which separate apparatuses of appropriate action are expediently used to achieve an effective treatment of contaminated water. An apparatus of identical basic design is proposed having a propeller which is also exchangeable subsequently, which, using only a few special parts, can be equipped and operated both as a mixer or as a self-priming aerator. In the water body to be treated, such an apparatus is advantageously used in pairs, in the depth as a mixer and in the upper water layers as an aerator, or alternatively in greater numbers depending on the local requirements. <IMAGE>
