A portable chainsaw 20 has an elongated supporting plate 12, which is attached at one end to a casing 21, and a driving motor 24, which is mounted on the casing 21. A gear wheel 13 is rotatably arranged on the casing 21 and is operatively connected to the motor 24 for its rotary drive. An endless cutter chain 11 extends around the supporting plate 12 and is in operative engagement with the gear wheel 13 in order to be driven in one direction for a movement around the supporting plate 12. The endless cutter chain 11 contains a number of links 14, a number of cutter holding plates 15, which connect the links 14 to one another, and cutters 16, which are each attached to one end of one of the cutter holding plates 15.
