To prevent the drying out of the spray nozzle (2) of an automatic spray gun (1), the spray nozzle is set, when the spray gun is not in use, in a protective cap (5). This protective cap has a sealing face (8) which tapers upwards, in which can be set the correspondingly conical sealing edge (10) of the spray nozzle. As soon as this has happened, a protective gas flows through the protective gas inlet (12) into the space (11) of the protective cap (5), and leaves the latter via a protective gas outlet (14). Once it is certain that all the air has been removed from the space (11) of the protective cap (5), then the protective gas inlet (12) and the protective gas outlet (14) are shut off. <IMAGE>
