Asymmetrical 1,4-dihydro pyridines of formula (I) R = phenyl, opt. substd. by 1 or 2 nitro groups and/or chlorine atoms, R1 = 1-4C alkyl, opt. substd. by 1-4C alkoxy R2 = 1-12C alkyl, opt. substd. by 1l4C alkoxy, CF3, or (C6H5)(CH3)N such that R1 and R2 are not the same, are prepared by reacting (VI) and (VIII) with RCHO to form (II) or (III). The reaction is effected in a solvent in the presence of an amine acetate as catalyst at -10 to +100 deg. C. - The amine acetate may be derived from piperidine, morpholine, piperazine, pyrrolidone, and their alkyl derivatives. The preferred catalyst is piperidine acetate. Pref. 0.01-0.7 moles of catalyst is used per mole of ylidene of formula (II) or (III).
