<p>The filter consists of a cylinder of lightly compacted asbestos fibre, previously treated by immersion in a satd. soln. of NaCl and dried; the fibres agglomerated by the salt deposits are then carefully sepd. An auxiliary filtering elements, pref. of crinkled paper, has the essential function of preventing asbestos fibres from being carried outside the filter envelope, under the aspiration effect exercised by the smoker. The asbestos fibres in the forward zone are adhered to the envelope by a thin layer of adhesive. For use in a cigarette-holder or a pipe, the filter is mounted in a cartridge with an open or perforated end. It can be made to be removable, so that it can be thrown away after it has become clogged.</p> |
