Paper coating compositions providing enhanced gloss and pick characteristics are manufactured from latices comprising heterogeneous polymer particles formed from a monomer composition comprising a monovinylidene aromatic monomer, an aliphatic C4-6 conjugated diene monomer, a C3-6 ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and C3-6 ethylenically unsaturated primary amide. The polymer particles have an initial domain and a subsequent domain wherein the initial domain has a higher content of the monovinylidene aromatic monomer than the subsequent domain.
