PURPOSE:To increase the utilization efficiencies of the fuel and the oxidant by preventing any gas leakage from the joint area between a gas separator and an electrolyte-holding body or an electrode by forming concaves and convexes on the peripheral area of the gas separator and on at least one of the peripheries of the electrolyte-supporting body and the electrode so as to bring them into close contact with each other. CONSTITUTION:Concave grooves 5a are formed on a gas separator 4 for separately supplying an oxidant and a fuel while convex stripes 5b are formed on an electrolyte-holding body 1 or an electrode which is to be brought into contact with the gas separator 4 in such a manner as to connect the concave grooves 5a and convex stripes 5b to each other. In another method, convex stripes 5b are formed on the gas separator 4 and caused to encroach upon the electrolyte-holding body 1. The height of the convex areas or the depth of the concave areas is adjusted to be around 0.1-0.5mm.. Owing to the above constitution the gas separator 4 and the electrolyte-holding body 1 are made in close contact with each other and the oxidant or fuel does not leak out from the fuel cell into the external atmosphere. Consequently, a high generation efficiency and a high performance of the fuel cell can be maintained for a long time. |
