PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber of quartz having excellent radiation resistance by incorporating an agent for capturing the resulting product of decomposition into an Si buffer layer and lead oxide in a halogen-contg. resin jacket layer. CONSTITUTION:An Si buffer layer 4 contains an agent for capturing the resulting product of decomposition. For example, Al2O3, CaO.Al2O3.2SiO2.4H2O, BeO, MgO, CaO, BaO, ZnO, CdO, SiO2, SnO2 and TiO2 are preferable as said capturing agent. The preferred form thereof is <=100mum, more preferably <=10mum grain size. A jacket layer 5 covering the layer 4 contains lead oxide in a halogen-contg. resin such as, for example, polytetrafluoroethylene and various others which form gas, etc. to deteriorate the properties of quartz fibers when exposed to radiations. For example, PbO, PbO2, Pb3O4, Pb7O11 and PbO6 are preferred as the lead oxide. There are a precoating layer 3, a clad layer 2 and a core part 1 in the layer 4. |
