<p>An apparatus enabling a surgeon to determine the degree of self-correcting astigmatism to be applied to the eye during a suturing procedure comprises an ocular microscope (10) provided with a device (34, 92, 106) for directing a ring of light onto the anterior surface of the cornea of the eye (78) such that the cornea will reflect the ring towards the eye piece (22) of the microscope. The eye piece is provided with means (60, 80) for determining the shape of the reflected ring and hence the degree of astigmatism applied to the cornea by the surgeon; in particular this means may be in the form of a comparison ring (103) which may be viewed in the same field of view as the reflected ring and being adjustable by the surgeon to provide a series of comparison rings for comparison with the reflected ring and corresponding to successive degrees of corneal astigmatism.</p> |
