A mesh (2) made of intersecting bands of high tensile strength of oriented plastic is coated on both sides with a plastic film (3, 3') for sealing purposes. The lower edge region of the covering tarpaulin (1) is reinforced by an edge strip (4) composed of the same material as the main part of the covering tarpaulin (1). Embedded between the main part of the covering tarpaulin (1) and the edge strip (4) is a reinforcing cord (7) extending approximately in the longitudinal centre of the edge strip (4). A through opening (8) for a securing rope is formed by cutting out a flap (9), which is folded down over the reinforcing cord (7). The edge strip (4) is connected to the main part by hot welding. A covering tarpaulin of this type has an excellent strength and a tear-out resistant through opening (8). <IMAGE>
