The disclosed combine harvester gathers and mows the stalks of a growing crop in an upright attitude. The mown stalks are first transferred in the upright attitude at a speed that varies with the speed of the harvester and are subsequently delivered to threshing apparatus in a sideways attitude at a constant speed. The change in attitude and speed is effected in two stages. An intermediate transfer device, such as a chain belt 19, runs at the variable speed and changes the attitude of the stalls from upright to sideways. The intermediate device delivers the sideways positioned stalks to a constant speed transfer device 2 leading to the threshing apparatus. <IMAGE> |
