An illuminating device (LP, LS) generates a light cone (LK) of diffuse light which is directed obliquely relative to the longitudinal axis of the observing device (BO). The observing device (BO) and the illuminating device (LP, LS) are aligned with respect to one another in such a way as to produce a dark-field illumination of the optical waveguide (LW). The edge lines (RL1, RL2) of the core (HK) are situated inside a bright band of light (HB) which occurs in the central region of the optical waveguide (LW). <IMAGE>
