According to the invention, a first spectrum is extracted from the periodic signal sequence, a specified number of further spectra are chosen on the basis of a selectable quality criterion, a Fourier transformation of the spectr into the frequency space is undertaken and, on the basis of signals in the Fourier spectrum, the characteristic value of a test sample, in particular the blood oxygen saturation, is determined by comparison with a given calibration curve.
