Arranged in a vacuum cleaner in one lower shell 1 of the housing is a motor fan which is covered by a hood projecting over the upper edge of the lower shell 1 of the housing and has air outlet slots 6. The lower shell 1 of the housing is covered by a lid 8 which forms flow channels in the region of the hood 4, into which flow channels the air from the hood 4 enters through air outlet slots 6. In this case, in order to achieve a long path for the air emerging from the hood, for sound-damping reasons, the air outlet slots 6 are arranged in the side surface 5 of the hood 4 which faces an upstream dust bag compartment. The air then flows in a flow channel 7 bounded by the lid 8 virtually around the entire hood 4 up to outlet openings 12 arranged on the rear side. <IMAGE>
